Rules of Design: 16 - 20

16. Create Images, Don't Scavenge

Silverchair - Neon Ballroom
For this image, an actual neon sign was constructed for the photograph, adding more depth to the title of "Neon Ballroom."

17. Ignore Fashion, But Acknowledge Trends

Neko Case - Middle Cyclone
This one is a successful blend of styles, in my opinion. While it may look fashionable, there is no particular "fashion statement" going on. Rather than an overdose of visual imagery that usually accompanies fashion, it sticks with a non-flashy monochromatic scheme yet acknowledges the trend of handwritten type.

18. Make It Dynamic, Communication is Process

Radiohead - Hail to the Thief
Upon first glance, it is unclear what exactly this image is portraying. But further investigation reveals a "type as image" illustration resembling an oil or tectonics diagram, with various handwritten commercial and/or news related hype words. Its a dynamic image, the meaning of which is discovered through process.

19. Look To History But Don't Repeat It

Silverchair - Young Modern

This image takes the neoplasticism of Mondrian and adds a third dimension. Putting Mondrian's purposely flat compositional style into the 3D realm with diagonals and depth, it juxtaposes the old with the new and fittingly represents the title "Young Modern."

20. Design Is Structure

Secret Machines - Ten Silver Drops
Instead of "Symmetry Is Evil," I went with our "new" rule, since I don't agree that symmetry is evil. In fact, here is a design which I think works nicely, despite being very symmetrical. It works because it is simple, yet well structured.
